Physical inactivity is a global issue, identified as the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality, directly responsible for 2,500 deaths per year in Scotland and 5.3 million worldwide.
In their position statement, Maintaining health and treating illness through regular physical activity, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (RCPSG) lead by example in calling for a cross-sectoral approach, working collaboratively with partners to ‘Invest human and capital resource in programs, and policies that are effective in increasing physical activity’.

The Daily Telegraph reports on the findings of a University of Cambridge study which revealed exercising was more important than body weight for longevity. The study of more than 334,000 people over 12 years found that a 20 minute brisk walk everyday had ‘major health impacts, reducing the risk of premature death.’
