HEALTHY POWERWFUL COMMUNITIES – MEND Programme

Background Information

Scottish Sports Futures through Mytime Active has been awarded funding from the Big Lottery Fund as part of the ‘Healthy Powerful Communities’ project to support a range of services aiming to halt the rising levels of obesity and increase participation in physical activity.

The MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition…Do it!) Programme was developed at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and the University College London Institute of Child Health and is one of the UK’s most innovative and effective obesity prevention and treatment programmes for 7 to 13 year old children (and their parents). The MEND Programme is a 10-week multi-component healthy lifestyle programme encompassing education on healthy eating, fun games to stimulate an active interest in physical activity and behaviour modification techniques to boost self-confidence.

MEND and Active East

The MEND programme will operate in partnership with the Active East programme which aims to create a legacy from the 2014 Commonwealth Games for young people in the East of Glasgow by increasing levels of physical activity and building skills through volunteering. Active East is managed by Scottish Sports Futures and has had an established presence within East End communities since May 2011. This legacy programme is delivered in conjunction with Glasgow Kelvin College, youth work organisations and sports clubs. Communities in the East of Glasgow create some of Scotland’s most concerning social statistics with many falling within the lowest 5% of the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation.

This new targeted piece of work will involve developing a local area project steering group with representation from NHS, Glasgow Life, Active East, Strategic Youth Alliance, Community Safety and Active Schools.

Update – MEND 7-13

Our first programme involves free fun sessions for children aged 7-13 who are above a healthy weight for their age and an accompanying adult.
The multi – component programme places emphasis on healthy eating, behaviour change, physical activity and healthy family lifestyles.

• Learn from MEND Leaders and each other in an open and supportive environment

• Learn to read labels and cook healthy recipes

• Turn conflict around food into family fun
